To achieve success in affiliate marketing, the affiliate must first make investments, especially in smart advertising.  These investments will pave the way towards a higher income.

1.  Invest in pay-per-click search engines

While traffic can be generated to one’s website by using search engine optimization, the legitimate affiliate marketing opportunities can be found in pay-per-click search engines, such as Google and Overture.  When an affiliate goes to such search engines, he reduces the risk of running into bogus affiliate programs.

Many consumers today also realize that the good products are those that are found in such pay-per-click search engines.  Thus, the really serious buyers immediately go to them.  When the affiliate focuses on such search engines, his website will have profitable traffic.  And his affiliate marketing will have a great boost.

2.  Invest in one’s own email

The affiliate must have his own email dedicated to his affiliate marketing.  The usual procedure being done by most affiliates is to redirect the visitors of their websites to the Internet company to which they are affiliated with.  But the creative and wise affiliate should have his own email list.  This email list will be his ready target clients for whom he can send new or additional offers.

3.  Invest in creating one’s own affiliate (or affiliate-like) program

The concept of affiliate marketing is a sound economics idea that has been practiced and been proven to be effective for many years now.  It survived industrialization.  It survived the Great Depression.  And it can cope with the technology-driven e-commerce.  Therefore, an affiliate will find it beneficial if he can establish his own affiliate or affiliate-like program.

If establishing an affiliate program sounds daunting, the affiliate may opt to provide his visitors a unique offer when such visitor will refer his friends to the website.

All the above three investments are all about smart advertising.  And smart advertising will generate higher incomes for the affiliate.
